Opportunity.

That word ran through Lucas’s head for days. What opportunity? He was trapped in a dimly lit room with nothing to do except fling galvanized spikes around. That and try to not stare at the ceiling and its endless pulsing. Most of the time he could ignore the pulsing entirely, but it just never stopped. All it took was a slight glance and the damn pulsing would suck you in.

Every time that he got sucked in by the damn pulsing, he would lose all sense of time. The next thing he knew he’d either wake up on the floor or get snapped back to his sense by his uncle. The worst part was the time. He did not know how long he’d been stuck down there, or how much longer he would be trapped.

All he knew was that he had to get away from the pulsing. It was driving him insane.

So much for opportunity. More like Torture.

“Mesmerizing isn’t it,” said William.

“Dammit,” blurted Lucas as he finally pulled his attention away from the ceiling.

“Ha-ha, that never stops being amusing,” said William but he didn’t really laugh so it could not have been that funny.

“Sweets?” asked Lucas.

“Huh,” said William as he looked down at his hands then handed Lucas a basket of sweets, “Oh, sorry. Bit of a change in plans, you’re getting out of here.”

That was great news. No excellent news. But he didn’t feel excited. He should have been excited, but he wasn’t. He was nervous.

“What changed?” asked Lucas.

“Frankly, my patience,” said William as he turned around and activated the gate, “Magister Cadence has been inquiring about you all week. I’m convinced that if he doesn’t see you soon, he’s going to storm the estate.”

“Magister Cadence?” asked Lucas, “That doesn’t sound like him.”

“I know. You’re right, he won’t storm the place,” said William, “He’ll send me another letter, and another letter. You do not know how annoying he can be. Besides, I think you’ve reflected for long enough.”

“As long as I’m getting out of here,” said Lucas even though he still felt that knot of anxiety in his chest.

“You say that now,” said William as he activated the gate.

“Should I know something?” asked Lucas.

William placed his hand on Lucas’s shoulder, “Good luck,” then he shoved him through the gate.
